Ellen Houlihan’s breakout short film Joan’s Day Out, stars Oscar-nominated actor Sally Kellerman (M*A*S*H), Tara Lynne Barr (God Bless America) and Betsy Franco. Reminiscent of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the story centers on three generations of women with grandma (Sally Kellerman) escaping from an assisted living home for a day to help her granddaughter out of a jam. Set in a fictional setting evocative of Ellen’s hometown Allendale, New Jersey.
Working in LA, she talks about her start in filmmaking, the art and its business side, and getting into the director’s chair. With a unique way of seeing the qualities in actors that bring about her directorial vision, Joan’s Day Out, made its New York premiere at the Gen Art Film Festival and around the film festival circuit.
