March is Women’s History Month and three years ago, I had an opportunity to attend a great event hosted by then New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine. It happened to fall on my birthday.

Subject: Please Join Governor Corzine for a Women’s History Month Reception Honoring New Jersey Women
Good Afternoon,
Please find the attached invitation to join Governor Jon S. Corzine for a Women’s History Month Reception Honoring New Jersey Women, this Friday, March 27 at Drumthwacket from 6-8pm. You may RSVP to this event by sending a confirmation email to RSVP.WomenHistory@gov.state.nj.us. Please note, this event is by invitation only.
We look forward to your joining us this Friday.
There had to have been over 300 women from all over the state in all areas of municipal and county government, agencies, business and private enterprise. The networking energy was electric and I met an incredible cross-purpose of women working on supporting their agendas through new connections and potential partnerships. Exhilarating to the point I almost imagined myself in office…
NOOO. What am I thinking? So I checked out what the State of New Jersey’s Department of Community Affairs had to offer in their calendar of events celebrating Women’s History Month. The first event hit me right between the eyes: 40 Hour Rape Crisis Confidential Advocate Training. Great.
The next event listed was an International Women’s Day Celebration at the Women’s Rights Information Center, but that’s in Englewood, N.J., anything in Trenton? Nope. Next came the Spring Gala Benefit 180 Turning Lives Around, the largest fundraising event of the year to help end domestic and sexual violence in their community (Middletown, NJ).
Let’s see, then there’s the Lovely, Still Dinner & Movie for Caregivers, a complimentary program sponsored by Career & Life Complimentary and Home Instead Senior Care at the Transitions Center for Women in Flemington, N.J. Hmm. Next we have the Fifth Annual Gala Dinner & Fashion Show– just in time to get me another little black dress.
At the end of the month there are two entrepreneural and career events– on Wednesday, March 28, the 3Ms: Money/Management/Models for Success at the Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship in Madison, N.J. and finally an end-of-the-month celebration of Woman’s History Month Open House at the County College of Morris sponsored by the Women’s Center at CCM and Dress for Success Morris County, they invite you to come with a friend and they will help you get back into the workforce. Depressing.
There was a Press Release today– NJ Governor’s Conference for Women announced speakers that will deliver the keynote address at the 2012 NJ Governor’s Conference for Women slated for Tuesday, May 7-8 at the Atlantic City Convention Center. The keynote speaker is Dr. Lois Frankel, a life coach, wrote the book (literally) on coaching people to succeed in business. Her books include Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office and Nice Girls Don’t Get Rich. Other speakers include an investment banker, medical/diet expert and a TV personality and former Olympic skier. Just great. The theme of the 2012 NJ Governor’s Conference for Women is “It’s All About You.”
Who would go to this? Is it all fluff?, but then there’s a “one stop” counseling center providing participants with feedback on career building, resumes and employment opportunities. Wait, a nine-hole golf outing has been added to this year’s conference– but you have to pay for it with proceeds going to underwrite conference admissions. It sounds like this women’s conference is just the thing for the opposite sex because would any guy go to something like this sponsored by the New Jersey state government? I guess there had to be announcement pretty fast after yesterday’s press conference with the Governor’s bashing of his “arch nemesis” –the NJEA– for their advertising budget. Appropriately, it was March 8, International Women’s Day.
